Chapter Eight

Jacob watched her leave the room and frowned once she was gone. He suspected she had just lied to him about her plans for the evening and he wondered what she was really up to.

Since the day of the gunshots that had come far too close to her, he’d been worried about her. It was comforting to know that during the days they worked right next door to each other. It was also somewhat comforting to know her apartment was upstairs from the police station.

What worried him was if she went out and he wasn’t with her. Anything could happen to her when she wasn’t in the shop or at home or wasn’t with him. As much as he wanted to find out who killed Big John, he also wanted to know who was after her. He needed to answer that question as soon as possible, before anything else happened to her.

He wondered if the note she’d received was just a ruse and whoever was after her, it had nothing at all to do with her seeing him. But he couldn’t figure out any reason why anyone would want to harm her.

He’d seen the respect she garnered around Coyote Creek, and how friendly she was to the people in town. Everyone seemed to like her, so who had tried to shoot her? Who had stood in her parking lot with a knife in an obviously threatening manner?

Once she left, Johnny came into the office to speak to him. Ashley’s big brother, like all of the King siblings, had black hair and vivid blue eyes.

Jacob gestured him to the chair across from him at the table and for a couple of minutes the two exchanged pleasantries about the weather and the town.

“The first thing I need is for you to fill me in on what your thoughts are about Caleb,” Johnny said.

“I really shouldn’t discuss the ongoing details of an investigation, but I’ll tell you this—Caleb is still at the top of my suspect list, along with his friend Leroy Hicks.”

“Leroy is a slimy little man who is probably taking advantage of my brother right now as we speak. Stella better watch her back with that one. I can’t believe she hired him as the foreman at your place. Trust me, he’ll take your mother for whatever he can all the while being drunk on the job.”

“Now tell me what you really think about him,” Jacob said wryly.

Johnny grinned and leaned back in the chair. “Needless to say, I don’t like the man.”

“So noted,” Jacob replied. “And to make matters worse, his alibi just fell through.” Jacob went on to explain to Johnny what he’d just told Ashley.

“That bastard,” Johnny said when Jacob was finished.

“Leave him to me, Johnny,” Jacob said. “It’s difficult because my two top suspects are so close, but trust me, I’ll get to the truth of things. I just need some more time.”

“Where does the drug case against Caleb stand?” There was a touch of weariness in Johnny’s voice.
