Chapter Eight
Jacob watched her leave the room and frowned once she was gone. He suspected she had just lied to him about her plans for the evening and he wondered what she was really up to.
Since the day of the gunshots that had come far too close to her, heâd been worried about her. It was comforting to know that during the days they worked right next door to each other. It was also somewhat comforting to know her apartment was upstairs from the police station.
What worried him was if she went out and he wasnât with her. Anything could happen to her when she wasnât in the shop or at home or wasnât with him. As much as he wanted to find out who killed Big John, he also wanted to know who was after her. He needed to answer that question as soon as possible, before anything else happened to her.
He wondered if the note sheâd received was just a ruse and whoever was after her, it had nothing at all to do with her seeing him. But he couldnât figure out any reason why anyone would want to harm her.
Heâd seen the respect she garnered around Coyote Creek, and how friendly she was to the people in town. Everyone seemed to like her, so who had tried to shoot her? Who had stood in her parking lot with a knife in an obviously threatening manner?
Once she left, Johnny came into the office to speak to him. Ashleyâs big brother, like all of the King siblings, had black hair and vivid blue eyes.
Jacob gestured him to the chair across from him at the table and for a couple of minutes the two exchanged pleasantries about the weather and the town.
âThe first thing I need is for you to fill me in on what your thoughts are about Caleb,â Johnny said.
âI really shouldnât discuss the ongoing details of an investigation, but Iâll tell you thisâCaleb is still at the top of my suspect list, along with his friend Leroy Hicks.â
âLeroy is a slimy little man who is probably taking advantage of my brother right now as we speak. Stella better watch her back with that one. I canât believe she hired him as the foreman at your place. Trust me, heâll take your mother for whatever he can all the while being drunk on the job.â
âNow tell me what you really think about him,â Jacob said wryly.
Johnny grinned and leaned back in the chair. âNeedless to say, I donât like the man.â
âSo noted,â Jacob replied. âAnd to make matters worse, his alibi just fell through.â Jacob went on to explain to Johnny what heâd just told Ashley.
âThat bastard,â Johnny said when Jacob was finished.
âLeave him to me, Johnny,â Jacob said. âItâs difficult because my two top suspects are so close, but trust me, Iâll get to the truth of things. I just need some more time.â
âWhere does the drug case against Caleb stand?â There was a touch of weariness in Johnnyâs voice.
